The International Design Conference on Sustainable and Innovative Design is a multi-disciplinary conference on Sustainability concepts in the several design fields to adapt to the ‘New normal’ in the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic.

The conference will focus on design processes & concepts, new advances in design theory and research methods, impactful societal design, design & materials for sustainability and innovative technologies.

The conference will provide a forum to:

  • exchange and sharing of latest design information and knowledge through an exhibition and workshop on a circular economy

  • disseminate of the high-quality research and design approach by virtual videos and posters presentation

  • present new developments in various design fields with networking sessions

Associate Professor Jacqueline Norton:

Short Bio:

Jacqueline Norton is an Associate Professor with international expertise and specialist knowledge of transnational education (TNE), related to partnership development and operations. She is the Deputy Director of International Partnerships for the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts. Jacqueline has 25 years’ experience working in design practice, over 10 years as international academic, applying her entrepreneurial leadership skills to growing international external networks in her partnership role including working with in-country representatives from the British Council and the Department of International Trade.



Professor Colin Gale:

Short Bio:


Colin Gale is Professor of Fashion and Textiles and Academic Director International at Birmingham City University (BCU). He has managed design departments at BCU most recently the School of Fashion and Textiles.

He has research interests in technology, business and cultural studies, particularly the relationship between computing, creative practice and industry. Recent publications have focused on the future role of androids and AI within fashion and textiles.






Dr Matthew Jones


Short Bio:

Dr Matthew Jones is Head of School at Birmingham School of Architecture & Design, Birmingham City University. He is an architect and academic with expertise in sustainable design, placemaking, advanced methods of construction and collaborative interdisciplinary live projects. Matthew developed the innovative BA(Hons) Design for Future Living degree in Collaboration with TV Architect George Clarke’s educational charity MOBIE (Ministry of Building Innovation and Education) and is a co-founder of the School’s Green Gown Award 2021 finalist project, the Experimental Sustainability Studio. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Design Council Expert.
